Middle Leaders Leading Change
Welcome to Middle Leaders Leading Change (MLLC)
A warm welcome to our online professional learning programme for middle leaders. We are aware of the demanding jobs you undertake and to this end our online programme has been developed to work around busy lives. We hope you will find it an enjoyable professional learning experience, supporting and challenging you to become confident in leading change in your context - and to develop against your professional standards.
You do not need to hold an ‘official’ promoted post, e.g. Principal Teacher, to undertake this programme, but you should be established in a middle leader role, that is, leading areas of work for the whole department, school or setting.
The learning is online and self-directed, but a supportive structure is provided.
We offer a suggested pathway for the PLAs (professional learning activities) but recognise some of you may wish to adapt this to your needs / interests.
You can choose to gain a certificate by submitting a write-up of your Change Initiative.
Everything you need to get started and complete the programme is contained in these webpages.
This is a flexible online programme consisting of six (5 core and 1 selected) separate self-directed professional learning activities (PLAs). In addition, there is a Change Initiative to be undertaken in your setting, that you choose, and which should provide a vehicle for you to put your learning into practice.
The learning is online and self-directed, but a supportive structure is provided. With that in mind, we encourage you to:
-
Look after your wellbeing
-
Devote appropriate time to the programme and set goals for yourself
-
Plan your learning to fit around other commitments at work and home
-
Engage in professional dialogue with your colleagues about your learning
-
Be mindful of your professional values and standards
-
Have access to a reliable device and broadband internet
-
Be prepared to set aside 3-4 hours for each self-directed Professional Learning Activity (PLA). Six completed PLAs are required to complete the programme.
-
Consider how you will apply or integrate your learning in context as you go, through your chosen Change Initiative.
You will need to set aside 18-24 hours for online learning (3-4 hours per PLA; 6 PLAs to complete) as well as time in your setting to integrate the learning through your chosen Change Initiative. This might take a session or longer, and this will depend on how many hours you work.
Leading their own learning, participants will:
- Self-awareness: develop awareness of individual areas of strength / development needs and how this awareness can inform improvements to leadership
- Anti-racism: develop an understanding of identity, privilege and power and how to actively encourage and celebrate diversity
- Leadership of change: develop knowledge, understanding and confidence in the use of different models to lead and scaffold change.
- Coaching as a model of practice: enhance awareness and knowledge of coaching approaches for leadership and increase confidence in practising these.
Participants undertake six online professional learning activities (PLAs) and a Change Initiative in their setting to put their learning into practice. You will need to register to access the PLAs. The five core PLAs are:
- Self-awareness for middle leaders
- Understanding middle leadership
- Change Models
- Using data to lead change
- Engaging others in change
With one further PLA selected from:
- Anti-racism
- Coaching
- Curriculum
There are 4 optional videos to support your learning.
To complete the programme and receive a certificate, participants are required to complete the six PLAs and submit a completed Change Initiative template.
We recommend you complete the programme over twelve (working) months, though recognise it may take longer for some, depending on the nature of the Change Initiative.
You can start the programme at time of your own choosing, and complete it in your own time. If you decide to send in a write-up for certification, you can do this at any time.
There is an optional Reflective Journal for you to use, if you want to.
