Maths Tales competition
Maths Tales invites young authors to create a story that includes maths. Maths Tales is offered in partnership with Read Write Count during Maths Week Scotland.
The theme for Maths Tales 2026 is Travel Tales.
Your tale could be about any journey, some ideas include:
- travelling to the bottom of your garden and the mini beasts you meet along the way
- a journey to school or nursery
- a trip to a special place, real or imagined
- a holiday to another town or country
Who can take part
We welcome entries from:
- primary school children
- home-educated children working at first or second level
- children attending secondary schools who are working at first or second level
Entries can be by teams or individuals. Teams will be judged in the age category of the oldest team member.
Submit an entry
Entries must be submitted by an adult on behalf of the child.
Submit your entry by 6pm on Friday 25 September 2026.

Entry format
Entries can be in English or Gaelic and illustrations are encouraged. They can be typed or hand written using one of the Maths Tales competition templates:
- comic strip traditional (PDF)
- modern comic strip modern (PDF)
- picture and short story (Word)
- freestyle written story with lines (PDF)
- freestyle written story (Word)
Ensure that you complete the entry details at the top of the template.
Scan or photograph hand-drawn or illustrated entries and save your file as a PDF, JPG or Word document.
What to include
This year's theme is Travel Tales.
How you include this theme is up to you, but all entries must contain:
- the author's name, level, class and school
- a story title
- a shape
- a number
- the Maths Week Scotland mascot, Finn Finity
Only entries from within Scotland will be accepted.
There will be one winner for each age category, Highly Commended entries will also receive a prize.
Only one entry per child will be accepted. Entrants may not win more than one prize.
Prizes are awarded per entry, so in the case of a team entry winning, the team members will need to share the prize.
Entries must be original works, and not under copyright to any other person or organisation. Entries found to be in breach of these terms will be disqualified and removed from the judging process.
Entries must be submitted by an adult aged 18 or over on behalf of the children taking part.
Entries must include first name and class, as stated in the entry requirements, or they will not be eligible to win a prize.
Maths Week Scotland is unable to confirm receipt of entries and takes no responsibility for entries that have failed to deliver.
Winners will be notified by email shortly after the closing date, and asked to provide a postal address to send their prize to. In the event of a winner not responding within 5 days of notification, Maths Week Scotland reserves the right to allocate the prize to another winner. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted.
Maths Week Scotland accepts no responsibility for entrants not receiving communications due to spam filters, accidental deletion, incorrect email provided, or for any other reason.
Maths Week Scotland accepts no responsibility for winners not receiving their prize once it has been dispatched, and in the event of this is unable to provide compensation.
Maths Week Scotland’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. This includes any judging that occurs.
Entries will be displayed on the Maths Week Scotland website and social media channels.
All entries must be received by 6pm on Friday 25 September 2026. Entries received after this date will not be accepted.
There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter this competition.
Prizes are non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives.
Prizes are subject to availability.
Personal data submitted will be used for the administration of the competition only. Consent will be gained from the winners before publishing any personal details of the winning entries online.
By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.
The competition opens on 17 September 2026.
The competition closes on 26 September 2026.
Winners Announced during Book Week Scotland from 16 to 22 November 2026.
